Purchased by the Howard family and placed at Knob Creek in 1932, the 15-by-18-foot cabin has been repaired over the years but never dated. Now, a new study will date the logs in the Knob Creek structure.

“First we have to precision sand the samples down to about 800 grit so that we can see the rings pop out just like furniture that’s been polished,” he said, explaining the process.

After the rings pop out, next thing we’ll do is measure the width of the rings to the nearest thousandth of a millimeter and come up with a series of say 100 years long.

The software takes that 100 years and slides it down the master chronology until, just like a fingerprint, it falls into place.

Then we know the innermost ring on the log and the outermost ring, the cutting date.

“Just to give you an idea, the cabin at the Memorial dated to 1848 and there are an average of about 39 rings on the end of those logs—at Knob Creek there’s an average of 130” Barber said.
